Alonia, Zakynthos

Alonia (Greek: Αλώνια) is a Greek settlement in the municipality of Alykes in the island of Zakynthos, Greece. It is in the municipal district of Ano Gerakari. Alonia's 2001 population was 521 people. Its elevation is 140 m and it is situated in a small mountain range. The nearest beach is nearly 4 km to the north, east of nearby Alikanas.

Location and transportation

Alonia is located about 13 km northwest of Zakynthos and southeast of Volimes.

The village has about 4 km of paved road, 4 km of gravel road and has about 3 to 4 km of hydro and phone lines.

Geography

The area is hilly and also contains farmlands. Parts of the area offer no panoramic view except for the Vrachionas mountains; the northeastern portion offers a view of Kefalonia and the mainland including southwestern and central Etoloakarnania and the northwestern Peloponnese.

History

After World War II and the Greek Civil War and the 1953 quake, its buildings were rebuilt and emigration occurred at a higher rate until the 1970s, the settlement recovered a small part of the population between 1991 and 2001. Alonia became connected with asphalt in the 1970s and 1980s. Electricity, radio and automobiles were introduced in the mid-20th century, television in the late-20th century and computer and internet at the turn of the millennium. In 1997, the ex-community (now a village and a municipal district) joined to become the newly formed municipality of Alykes.

There is an elementary school, a church and a square, the school also serves students from Ano Gerakari and Kastelia. The nearest high school is in Katastari.
